Recent research has demonstrated that the human body’s natural inflammatory response could play a major part in the development of fibromyalgia. Clinical studies have found abnormal levels of inflammation markers in the spinal fluid and serum of fibromyalgia sufferers, confirming that the disorder has an inflammatory aspect to it.  Furthermore, brains in fibromyalgia patients consistently demonstrate signs of neuroinflammation.

This is relevant because CBD has been found to reduce inflammation by regulating inflammatory pathways within the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Fibromyalgia patients who use CBD report reduced pain and reduced anxiety, which are both common symptoms of the disease.

The pain-relieving effects of CBD can be explained by the way it affects the brain. CBD may interrupt the nerve pathways which send signals of pain between the body and brain. In other words, CBD could inhibit the brain from sending these messages of pain to the body, and therefore no pain is felt, or the amount of pain experienced is reduced.

As well as feelings of intense, unrelenting physical and mental lethargy, fatigue may also cause those affected to experience headaches, muscle and joint pain, sore throat, digestive disturbances, swollen lymph nodes, impaired memory and concentration, and depression. 

Symptoms vary in severity according to the individual, and in some cases can seriously detract from an individual’s quality of life.

Taking CBD for Fibromyalgia

People who suffer from fibromyalgia are finding the best delivery methods to be sublingual tinctures or vaporizing because of the speed of the effects of these methods. CBD-dominant products and a combination of CBD and THC products have both been found to be helpful in treating fibromyalgia.

Smoking or vaping CBD is best if you are looking for immediate pain relief. Smoking cannabis that is rich in CBD is the quickest way to reduce the symptoms. Vaping or smoking CBD allows you to directly inhale the product, which helps with quick absorption into the bloodstream and lungs. The effects may last up to three hours.

Consuming a CBD tincture sublingually can also be very effective. Simply put a few drops under your tongue and hold it there for at least 30 seconds before swallowing. This process helps with quick absorption and increases the speed at which the CBD takes effect.

You could also use topicals, which are a great option for reducing inflammation and helping with any external pain. You can simply apply the lotion, cream, or oil directly to the affected area of the skin.

If you are new to CBD, it’s always best to start with a low dosage and work your way up from there. The general consensus for beginners is to start off with 5 to 10 mg of CBD. You can then increase the dosage from there until you reach the desired effect. Dosage recommendation is tricky because every person is different, and what works for one person may not necessarily work for another. However, starting off low and increasing as needed is a good process to follow.
